When the “Greatest Cellist of the 20th Century”, Mstislav “Maestro” Rostropovich bought Gelston Castle Estate in 1979, he decided he would build an 8,300 square foot mansion that would be a present to his wife, Galina Vishneskaya, soprano singer of the Bolshoi Opera. The mansion was designed with the greatest detail to acoustic perfection and private retreat.
Upon its purchase by Safflyn Corporation, it was renamed Chateau Safflyn as reference to the Country Estates of cultural and artistic influence. It has been renovated as a carbon-neutral building surpassing LEED and operates on windpower.
